Hey, let’s all support this guys new restaurant with a nice bowl of curry! Sounds delicious! Nice to hear an EMU grad is opening a restaurant in this bad economy. Let’s wish him all the best.

A restaurant is a lot of money and it takes good friends to work the long hours required.

Here’s the full article – A group of friends who recently graduated with business degrees from local universities have come together to open their own restaurant in Ann Arbor.

Curry Up bills itself as a restaurant that specializes in Indian street food. Swetang Patel, Hardik Patel and Rutul Patel launched Curry Up last summer at 2711 Plymouth Road after receiving business degrees from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Eastern Michigan University.

“Ann Arbor has always been a very young and welcoming to other foods and cultures,” Swetang Patel says. “There really wasn’t a place with the food we wanted around here.”

Curry Up now employs a dozen people and has just revamped its website to make it more interactive with its customers. Swetang Patel says he and his partners want to continue to build up the restaurant’s brand and expand its delivery service.

“I’d like to have a strong delivery service in Ann Arbor, especially to the hospitals,” Swetang Patel says. “We would also like to highlight our vegan and gluten-free options.”

Runaway emus — Jethro and Ellie Mae — reunited

It’s unfair to keep us EMU down. Why I say, why do they want to cage us? I found this cool article about emu birds.

MORRIS, Alabama – Did you hear the one about “The Beverly Hillbillies”-named emus?

In a sitcom-worthy turn of events, two emus were separated for 10 days after they escaped from a Morris residence and were on the run in north Jefferson County. The two lovebirds — Jethro and Ellie Mae — are now safe at home.

Ellie Mae made it five days before she was captured by the Gardendale Police Department last week. Jethro was finally spotted Monday.

According to their owner, Ellie Mae and Jethro’s adventure began Saturday, Jan. 19.

Steve Shaffield, 61, of Morris, said he bought the emus a while back to sell them. “I wanted to make a little bit of money,” he said. “Saturday, I was loading them up to take to auction and they got loose.”

Shaffield said the emus wouldn’t cooperate and once the large, flightless birds started running, they basically walked over the 6-foot-high fence by hooking their feet in it. He couldn’t keep up with them. Emus can run up to 30 miles per hour.

“They got a brain about the size of a pea, and one of them went west and the other one went east,” Shaffield said.

Shaffield asked around and searched, but found no sign of either emu. Then Shaffield was in a store and heard that the Gardendale Police Department had captured an emu and called to see if it belonged to anyone in the area. Shaffield said he knew from the story, it must have been the female emu.

“She’s real docile. You can go up to her and pet her and hold her by the neck. She’s just a real sweetheart. And the male’s totally opposite.”

Drew Alexander, with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, helped capture the bird. Alexander said they give animals names for their system so he called her “Ellie Mae Emu.” Alexander took Ellie Mae to the Humane Society Rescue Barn in Mount Olive and fed her fresh veggies such as lettuce. Alexander said it’s not too difficult to care for emus, and they can eat just about anything. He said as far as he knows there are no special requirements for owning an emu.

Monday morning, Shaffield picked up Ellie Mae from the Humane Society barn. On his way home, he received a call from the Morris Police Department that her mate was spotted not too far from his house. Shaffield, who decided to call the male emu Jethro, drove out to the location.

“I opened the door and he saw his girlfriend and he started strutting around but he wasn’t stupid enough to get in the trailer,” Shaffield said.

Emus are known to mate for life, and Shaffield had a plan to get them both home. Shaffield lured Jethro back home by putting a lead line around Ellie Mae. “I walked her home and Jethro just moseyed along behind her,” Shaffield said.

Both emus are now safe in their pen.

“This morning I figured they wouldn’t have anything to do with me, but when I walked up to the fence they came over there just as forgiving and friendly as they could be,” Shaffield said. “They’re really kind of neat birds.”

Shaffield said he paid about $100 to get the emu from the humane society, and he still plans to sell the birds. He said he will probably take them to an exotic animal auction, and thinks he can get $40 for each bird. Emus are usually kept as livestock. According to the American Emu Association, the birds can be processed and provide meat. Also, the fat can be refined into oil used in cosmetic and health products and the leather is crafted into goods.

Shaffield expressed appreciation for those who helped return the emus and especially for the humane society.

“I was real pleased with the humane society. They were really nice and helpful. We just basically are animal lovers. We love all our animals. We got chickens, a couple goats, the biggest sheep you ever laid your eyes. We got a pot belly that’s getting overweight,” he said. “Chickens are my favorite.”

OMG … how cute are they! Little emu chicks. Don’t you just want one. Don’t they look sooooo soft. Really cute! But remember, they get big!

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo this week welcomed a flurry of feathered friends with the arrival of four adorable, distinctively striped baby emu chicks.

The chicks arrived last week from John Morony Wildlife Care Centre, who, as part of an ongoing partnership with WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, housed the baby emus throughout a month-long quarantine period.

Marcus Mellenbergh, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Bird Keeper, commented: “We’re thrilled to have a healthy and happy new brood with us. Emus grow extremely quickly – our chicks will be fully grown in the next five or so months – so now is a fantastic time to visit!”

These lovable creatures will grow to more than 1.2 metres, weighing as much as 50 to 60 kilograms as adults. The second largest bird in the world by height, the emu belongs to an ancient group of flightless birds known as ratites, one of the earliest offshoots in bird evolution.

The chicks were joined by other exciting new WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo habitants who now reside in the attraction’s newest exhibit, Kangaroo Walk-About. These animals include two Grey Kangaroos, six Agile Wallabies – some carrying baby Joeys in their pouches and eight vibrantly coloured Princess Parrots. The Princess Parrots are known for their affectionate and playful nature and are currently listed as endangered.

If Joelle Hackney had had her way when she was 18, she would have started college 2,400 miles from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), at Humboldt State in Arcata, California. But by the summer after her 2001 graduation from Stuart’s Draft High School in Augusta County, Va., Humboldt’s steep tuition and other logistical considerations forced her to put that dream on hold.

In the meantime, Hackney’s family encouraged her to consider EMU. Her mother, Marian Driver Hackney, was a 1970 graduate. Her grandmother, Virginia Weaver Driver (EMS ’35), was an even stronger advocate. Driver called herself EMU’s “twin,” having been born in 1917, the same year Eastern Mennonite School opened (her childhood home was the Weaver House, now occupied by offices of EMU’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding).

Hackney also had a few older cousins studying at EMU, and so by the fall of 2001 she was moving into a dorm room in Roselawn. California still beckoned, though. Hackney figured she would transfer after the year was over. But “I had some really awesome friends and they talked me into staying.”

Wow, talk about brave! Emu are fearless!

WATCH: Emu On the Loose on Florida Highway!

Motorists in Florida were treated to an unexpected surprise when they found themselves sharing the road with an emu early Wednesday morning.

The bird, known as Taco, broke free of his owner’s yard after jumping a four-foot fence, eventually making his way onto a Cape Canaveral highway. Apparently, Taco was looking for a mate — a task that (unsurprisingly) proved fruitless on the busy roadway.

Taco’s owner eventually retrieved his feathery friend and brought him home safely.
